Sam Lowes has taken provisional pole position for the final round of the 2013 World Supersport Championship at Jerez, just edging out Yakhnich Yamaha team-mate Vladimir Leonov.

Russian racer Leonov had looked on course to finish the Q1 session on top having led from the opening stages with a rapid lap of 1min 44.269secs, but Lowes would proceed to usurp him in the final minutes with his time of 1min 44.043secs.

Nonetheless, the fairly dominant Yamaha 1-2 gives the Japanese manufacturer some hope of overhauling Kawasaki in the manufacturers' table, even if the latter currently leads by a healthy 17 points. In short, Kawasaki needs just one of its large ZX-6R contingent to finish seventh or better come race day to defend its title.

Having languished down the order in FP1, Kenan Sofuoglu bounced back for a provisional front row spot in third position, heading off what is currently an all-Italian second row of Lorenzo Zanetti, Roberto Rolfo and Massimo Roccoli.

Michael van der Mark was seventh quickest, despite a crash at turn three, the Dutchman mirrored by Danny Webb and Kev Coghlan in hitting the tarmac over the course of the session. Despite this, both British riders would still end Q1 inside the top ten in ninth and tenth respectively.

Elsewhere, Magny-Cours standout Christian Iddon was 11th quickest, with Jack Kennedy in 15th. British newcomer Fraser Rogers was 31st on the ComPlus SMS Honda.
