PTR Honda confirms Raffaele de Rosa for full WSS season

Raffaele de Rosa secures a full-time WSS ride with PTR Honda following his star turn at Phillip Island.
PTR manager Simon Buckmaster has confirmed that Raffaele de Rosa has been signed to the team for the remainder of the World Supersport Championship season following his run to the podium in Australia.

The Italian was a last minute addition to the four-man team ahead of Phillip Island in what was originally proposed as a one-off ride.

However, the former Moto2 rider – who had never finished a WSS race higher than ninth – would prove a revelation come race day, battling for victory in the dramatic five lap sprint before eventually settling for third.

PTR's first WSS podium in more than a year, Buckmaster was sufficiently impressed to offer him a full-time ride alongside Jack Kennedy, Ratthapark Wilairot and Nacho Calero.

“We were on the podium with Raffaele De Rosa who is now confirmed for the rest of the year. In the past we have been criticised for signing what are considered paid for riders by the likes of Shaun Muir,” wrote Buckmaster in his regular 'Simon Says' column.

“Those people might be interested to know that in De Rosa this has certainly not been the case and since his success we have had riders with plenty of money contact us wanting to ride the bike. We have taken the decision to continue the season with Raffaele based purely on results after his ride in Australia being a one off ride to start with.

“He did a very professional job in Phillip Island and after not riding since October last year just got better and better as the event progressed.”

de Rosa will ride under the Core PTR Honda banner, directly alongside Wilairot.

Shaun Muir needs to remember that PTR are a small team running in a World Series without the mega money his Milwaukee Yamaha team enjoys. For three years it was PTR who amassed the most Honda points in WSS and still Honda did not offer them any support instead directing all the sponsors money to Ten Kate. Don't forget that until last year it was two full factory bikes that deprived the privateer PTR team of the WSS crown. When Shaun Muir can boast this level of success at world level on a shoestring then let him open his mouth, until then keep quiet.
