Sofuoglu turns ‘difficult weekend’ into victory

15 April 2014

Though he is certainly no stranger to the top of the World Supersport podium, Kenan Sofuoglu says he is particularly pleased to come away with a strong victory at Motorland Aragon after an otherwise troubled weekend.

Eager to regain ground in the overall standings after crashing at the Phillip Island opener, Sofuoglu had spent much of the weekend playing catch up after technical issues hampered him on the Friday.

Qualifying down in sixth place, victory seemed destined to be contested by his rivals instead, in particular Kev Coghlan and Jules Cluzel, but a strong push towards the end of the race would rewarded when the two riders ahead collided.

Gifting him the lead, Sofuoglu simply needed to keep it clean for the final three laps to reel off his 27th career Supersport win, much to his relief.

“It was a difficult weekend for me,” he said. “In morning warm up, I got my pace back. At the beginning of the race it was crazy, it took a while to see what would happen at the end of the race.

“During the last 5 laps I thought that it was time to make a move and win the race and then the crash happened. Because of the crash it looked like it was easy for me to win the race but was not. I am pleased with the 25 points and everything is looking good now for Assen.”

With Cluzel failing to finish, Sofuoglu has regained much of the ground he lost in Australia and is now just six points behind new series leader Coghlan.
