Van der Mark rues errors, but 'happy' with podium
15 April 2014
Michael van der Mark declared himself 'happy' with his first World Supersport podium of 2014 at Aragon after narrowly losing out on the win to Kenan Sofuoglu.
The Dutchman was determined to get his season back on track after he crashed out of the five lap restarted race in Australia with an uncharacteristic mistake. He made a fine start from fifth on the grid and led the opening laps of the 15 lap encounter before a small mistake at the hairpin demoted him to fourth.
Although he gained two places from Coghlan and Cluzel's incident on the twelfth lap van der Mark didn't quite have enough to reel Sofuoglu in during the final stages. Still, the result was a welcome return to the podium for the 21-year old and he believes he and the Ten Kate team can build on this performance.
“It was a really tough race,” he told
. “The whole weekend was quite difficult, in practices we weren't fast enough. The guys worked hard to find some solutions because we had strange problems.
“In the morning I showed the race pace that we had all weekend was quite good so I knew that in the race we would be alright. The start was quite ok, I was really aggressive in the first few laps and the bike was fast. I took the lead, tried to pull away but didn't get a bigger gap than 0.3secs,” he said.
“I kept pushing but made a small mistake. The guys passed me and I made a few more small mistakes again but I knew I had the pace for the podium. Unfortunately Kev [Coghlan] and Jules [Cluzel] crashed so it was just Kenan and me left. We had the same speed but I'm really happy with the podium because we needed it after Australia.”
