  • Dutchman Kevin Valk produces a surprise win in the rain in front of his home crowds
  • Ondrej Jezek fights back to second place, ahead of Matthieu Lussiana
  • British rider Kyle Smith ran second before crashing out mid-way through the race

Kevin Valk has taken a surprise maiden FIM Superstock 1000 Cup win on home soil at Assen after taking advantage of his local knowledge to defy difficult weather conditions and dominate in only his second race.

The Dutchman had been a top five contender around his home circuit throughout the weekend, but the added factor of rain would work in his favour further come race day.

Moving to the front of the field on the opening lap, Valk led by as much as ten seconds at one stage, before easing back in the closing stages to cross the line six seconds ahead of Ondrej Jezek.

Completing an excellent day for the Dutch contingent, Valk's win comes after Michael van der Mark triumphed in the WSS race, while the result marks a first win for the Belgian-based MTM Racing team too.

Behind him, the scrap for second looked to be heading the way of Kyle Smith before he crashed out on lap six, handing the position instead to Barni Ducati's Jezek, who in turn held off Matthieu Lussiana for a career-best second place. Of note, Lussiana's maiden podium comes after 47 starts.

Having started on pole position, Lorenzo Savadori couldn't translate that pace in the wet as he settled for fourth place, ahead of Aragon winner and championship leader Leandro Mercado.

Behind him, David McFadden won an intense battle with fellow Kawasaki rider Romain Lanusse for sixth place, with Fabio Massei, Balazs Nemeth and Nigel Walraven rounding out the top ten.
