World Supersport Championship leader Michael van der Mark will start the fifth round of the 2014 season from pole position after prevailing in a wet, but drying qualifying session at Donington Park.
With intermittent rain making conditions treacherous for the riders, the best of the lap times would come in a flurry of activity towards the closing stages, with van der Mark's final effort enough to put him a clear seven tenths up on his rivals.
An incident-packed session that would see crashes for no less than eight riders in the slippery conditions, van der Mark would emerge ahead of Kenan Sofuoglu, with Kev Coghlan completing the front row in third place on the DMC Panavto Yamaha.
PJ Jacobsen heads up the second row in fourth position, with Marco Bussolotti and Alessandro Nocco turning in their best qualifying performances of the season, despite the latter suffering a spectacular crash in the closing stages.
Imola race winner Lorenzo Zanetti starts in seventh place, ahead of Jules Cluzel – another rider to crash -, Riccardo Russo and local wild-card Sam Hornsey.
Beyond Nocco and Cluzel, Jack Kennedy and Florian Marino were other high-profile tumblers, the pair qualifying down in 18th and 16th respectively as a result.
