Jack Kennedy is celebrating after breaking his long awaited World Supersport podium duck with a feisty ride to second place on the CIA Insurance Honda.

In what has been a tough season for the former British Supersport front runner, Kennedy enjoyed a significant upturn of fortunes in Portugal having proven strong in free practice before placing the PTR-prepared Honda on the second row in fourth.

However, the Irishman would save his best for the race as fought his way up to the lead in front of Kenan Sofuoglu, rebuffing the former champion's attentions and even forcing him into an error that dropped him back.

Unfortunately for Kennedy, he would soon be overhauled by championship leader and eventual winner Michael van der Mark, but while Sofuoglu would also get the better of him as rain began to fall, the red flag and subsequent count-back would see him classified in second.

The culmination of his and the team's hard work, Kennedy was thrilled to get his chance to stand on a world championship podium for the first time.

"I am so happy with that," he said. "Everything was working right and I felt good. Leading the race was a great feeling and then when the rain came out I knew I could get on the podium so I took it very easy.

"Second place is a dream come true and it sets us up well for the break and to come back for a strong end of season. Thank you to CIA Insurance, PTR, Honda, Megabikes, Dawn International and all my sponsors for supporting me, this is the start of things to come."
