Calendar change to put vd Mark on title cusp?

If the FIM and Dorna do not replace South Africa on the WSBK/WSS calendar, Michael van der Mark is well placed to wrap up title in Jerez.
Michael van der Mark may have taken a significant step towards the 2014 World Supersport Championship title without even turning a wheel following the late change to this year's calendar.

The FIM and Dorna confirmed yesterday [Thursday] that the proposed Phakisa Freeway event at Welkom in South Africa has been cancelled, leaving just three rounds remaining in 2014 if they cannot find a replacement at this late stage.

Though Brno has been mooted as a potential replacement for the African event, with just over two months until the date in question, time is of the essence.

As such, if a replacement cannot be found, PATA Honda's van der Mark's already healthy advantage in the WSS standings means he is well placed to seal the title at the very next round in Jerez, his 53 point advantage over Jules Cluzel meaning he simply has to finish ahead of the Frenchman in Spain to win.

Having recently secured his second Suzuka 8 Hours title in as many years, van der Mark has won four of the eight races this season and finished second in another three.
