Lorenzo Savadori smashed the existing lap record to command the opening Free Practice session of the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup at Misano.

The championship leader ended the session with a time of 1m 37.598s, over one second under the existing lap record for the class, to lead title rival Roberto Tamburini by 0.64s.

With the Marco Simoncelli World Circuit's surface getting overhauled in early Spring, lap times suggested the new asphalt offers a greater level of grip.

To underline this Savadori took just a third of the session to dip under Davide Giugliano's existing lap record of 1m 38.825s from 2011. From there the rest of the field couldn't get within half a second of his time, the Italian the sole rider to lap under 1m 38s.

Indeed it was a postive start Nuova M2 Aprilia squad as Savadori's team-mate Kevin Calia ended the session in sixth, just under a full second back of the fastest time.

Ondrej Jezek placed his Barni Ducati in third while early leader Florian Marino was fourth. The Frenchman, who was forced to sit out the British round of the series after a heavy tumble in the series' last visit to Italy, was a late crasher as he sought to break into the top three.

Marino was on course to set the second fastest time of the session when he fell through the final sector. He led fellow Frenchman and Yamaha man Jeremy Guarnoni, who sat fifth at the session's close.

Just over one second slower than the fastest time, Kev Coghlan was seventh while Sylvain Barrier ended the first session in eighth.

There were positive results for Federico D'Annunzio, placing inside the top ten for the first time in 2015 at his home track, in ninth and Matthieu Lussiana, still yet to score a point this year, in tenth.
