Jules Cluzel has seen off a late charge by Sherdian Morais to keep hold of top spot in the opening free practice session as the World Supersport championship returns to action at the Lausitzring.

The CIA Landlords Insurance Honda rider notched up the fastest time of the session halfway through FP1 with a 1m 41.476s which remained unbeaten despite Morais on the Kallio Racing Yamaha closing to within 0.058s with his final lap before the chequered flag.

The South African’s impressive late pace shuffled championship leader Lucas Mahias down to third on the GRT Yamaha with defending champion Kenan Sofuoglu moved to fourth on the Kawasaki Puccetti Racing machine.

Federico Caricasulo grabbed sixth on the second factory Yamaha machine ahead of Luke Stapleford on the Profile Triumph while Hikari Okubo on the CIA Landlords Insurance Honda produced a surprise late lap to move up to seventh on the times ahead of British duo Kyle Smith (Gemar Team Lorini Honda) and Gino Rea (Team Go Eleven Kawasaki) with PJ Jacobsen rounding out the top ten as the fastest MV Agusta rider.
