- Lorenzo Zanetti claims first WSS win
- Kenan Sofuoglu suffers technical problems while holding commanding lead
- Michael VD Mark and Florian Marino now tied for title lead
Lorenzo Zanetti claimed his first World Supersport victory in front of his home fans at Imola on Sunday.
The Pata Honda rider inherited the lead after world champion Kenan Sofuoglu suffered another technical problem with his Mahi Kawasaki while holding a comfortable advantage with five laps to go.
The incident - thought to be a clutch related - marks Sofuglu's third non-score from the four races and second technical issue in as many races.
Sofuoglu's exit left Zanetti, riding with an Ayrton Senna replica helmet, to monitor a two-second advantage over team-mate Michael VD Mark, while Florian Marino completed the podium.
Zanetti dedicated his debut victory to Senna and Andrea Antonelli, who lost his life in the 2013 Russian WSS round.
Marino's Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres team-mate PJ Jacobsen and VFT Racing Yamaha's Fabio Menghi claimed their best ever results in fourth and sixth, while Team GO Eleven Kawasaki's Roberto Rolfo took his best of the season in fifth.
Marino and VD Mark are now tied for the title lead, with Sofuoglu's hopes on the ropes after dropping 40 points back.
Kev Coghlan's championship challenge was also dealt a blow when the Briton fell on only the second lap while trying to recover from a bad start, resulting in his first DNF of the season.
After claiming MV Agusta's first WSS pole, Jules Cluzel led the opening lap of the race before the pace of Sofuoglu and Zanetti proved too much to contain.
Worse was to follow when Cluzel ran into the gravel on lap 6 of 17, demoting him to eighth, while the suspected brake issue struck again to leave the Frenchman 15th at the flag.
