Sylvain Barrier has returned to the top of the FIM Superstock 1000 Championship standings after prevailing in an intense six lap sprint at Misano.
A race that was halted after four laps when Markus Reiterberger crashed and deposited fluid at turn three, the original 12 lap distance was reduced to six laps and the restart grid formed in the classification at the time of the red flag.
Despite this, Eddi La Marra retained his pole position, the Barni Ducati rider having led from the lights of the first start, while Michele Magnoni, Lorenzo Savadori and Barrier made up the remainder of the revised front row. Jeremy Guarnoni and Lorenzo Baroni – who originally started second and fourth – lined up fifth and sixth this time.
At the restart, La Marra got away well again, leading his team-mate Savadori through the opening turns, though Barrier would get the better of the erstwhile series leader to run second at the end of the first lap.
With momentum on his side, Barrier proceeded to progress up into the lead for the first time mid-way through the second lap, while Magnoni on the wild-card G.M S1000RR following through on lap three to make it a provisional BMW 1-2.
With the top four of Barrier, Magnoni, La Marra and Savadori barely separated, attention turned to Baroni on the second of the GoldBet BMW Italia machines, the Italian making swift progress up the order despite being edged off the circuit by Bryan Staring on lap two.
Indeed, having smashed the lap record just before the first phase was stopped, Baroni was quickly on the tail of the leaders and had little problem dispatching both Barni Ducatis to enter the final lap in third position.
With Magnoni consumed with attempting to overtake Barrier on the final lap, he wasn't expecting Baroni to launch a surprise challenge for second around the outside of turn 14. With Barrier inadvertently boxing Magnoni in, Baroni was able to complete the pass to grab second, but would ultimately run out of bends to challenge his team-mate for victory.
