Sylvain Barrier has retained his FIM Superstock 1000 Cup crown after doing exactly what he needed to secure a second consecutive title with one round still in hand.

The Frenchman came into the penultimate event of the season at Magny-Cours requiring nothing more than a sixth place finish to become the first rider since James Ellison to secure back-to-back SSTK 1000 titles.

And so it proved, a fairly tentative Barrier shrugging off a poor start to cross the line in fourth position to seal another title, in doing so claiming BMW's third championship success in four years.

The race itself was won by Jeremy Guarnoni, the local rider taking advantage of a complete restart and a shortened race distance of just nine laps (instead of 14 laps) to claim a fairly comfortable lights-to-flag success.

Indeed, Guarnoni had looked hard pressed to claim a win after getting away poorly at the first start, allowing Niccolo Canepa and Barrier to lead the way initially.

However, the race was stopped on lap four following a terrifying accident for Christoffer Bergman, the Swede coming down as he rounded Estoril and striking the wall at high-speed. Despite the heavy impact – which destroyed his BWG Kawasaki – he was seen to be sat up and communicating with doctors, though his full condition is currently unconfirmed.

At the restart, Guarnoni got away well from fellow Kawasaki rider Lorenzo Savadori and Ondrej Jezek, with Canepa and Barrier giving chase in fourth and fifth.

The only rider to have a chance of beating Barrier to the title, a determined Canepa would haul himself up to second position by the close of lap three, but would run out of time to put pressure on Guarnoni as he settled for his sixth podium of the season.
