BMW Italia rider Sylvain Barrier has taken pole position for the seventh round of the 2012 FIM Superstock 1000 Championship after surging ahead with his last flying lap.
With the previously damp circuit returning to dry conditions in the closing stages, Jeremy Guarnoni's provisional effort from Q1 was always under threat, though the Frenchman looked on course to hold firm out front as the clock ticked down.
However, Barrier would keep it cool in the final minutes to round the circuit in 2mins 12.992secs, almost a second faster than his countryman and claim a fifth pole position of the season.
Despite falling some 2.4secs short of Barrier's pole position winning time, championship leader Eddi La Marra – who is yet to win a race this season - will start from the front row in third place, where he will be joined by another Frenchman, this time Matthieu Lussiana, the ASPI Kawasaki rider producing easily his best qualifying performance of the year.
Just missing out on a maiden front row, Kev Coghlan nonetheless has a good chance to shine on home soil from fifth on the grid, ahead of Ondrej Jezek and Robbie Brown, the Brno star producing a fine qualifying effort in only his second SSTK 1000 outing.
Lorenzo Savadori, Alen Gyorfi and Christoffer Bergman round out the top ten, while Bryan Staring, who comes to Silverstone having moved himself into title contention by winning in Aragon and Brno, faces an uphill struggle from 14th on the grid.
