Top ten WTCC drivers: Ninth and Tenth

After asking you to vote for your leading drivers from the World Touring Car Championship season, the time has come to start the count-down to the driver you voted the top star of 2008.

Over the next five weekdays, we will be revealing the top ten in reverse order, with two drivers being revealed each day.

After asking you to give each driver a mark out of ten for their performances during the season, each drivers average score was calculated to decide the winner.

So today, ninth and tenth place...

WTCC Driver of the Year – Tenth place:

Name: Augusto Farfus
Team: BMW Team Germany
Car: BMW 320si
Wins: 2
Poles: 3
Podiums: 2
Championship points: 63
Championship position: 6th

Augusto Farfus had been tipped as a potential champion heading into the 2008 season, but ultimately his campaign turned into one of disappointment.

His year didn't start in the best of fashions when he was stripped of third place in the first race of the year in Brazil, although he battled into the points in race two. He wouldn't score again however until the Pau round in March, when his first pole position was converted into victory in the opening race.

A podium at Brno was followed by a disappointing weekend at Estoril, where he failed to score, although the Brazilian looked like returning to form with pole position at Brands Hatch.

Race day however was a different matter as an accident on lap one ended his hopes of a strong race day, although he came through the field to sixth in race two.

Farfus' second win of the season came next time out at Oschersleben and while he would score in all bar two of the remaining races, on only one occasion was he on the podium and his season ended in similar fashion to how it started as he crashed out of the final race in Japan.

WTCC Driver of the Year – Ninth place:

Name: Alessandro Zanardi
Team: BMW Team Italy Spain
Car: BMW 320si
Wins: 1
Poles: 1
Podiums: 2
Championship points: 36
Championship position: 13th

Alex Zanardi readily admits that he isn't going to finish at the head of the World Touring Car Championship standings, but the former single-seater racer remains a firm favourite with fans for the way he has battled back from the Champ Car accident which almost cost him his life.

The Italian hadn't troubled the scorers before heading to Brno for round five but he rolled back the years with a stunning performance in the Czech Republic, where he took pole and victory in race one, and then almost beat Gabriele Tarquini to the win in race two.
