D'Aste returns to Wiechers

Having seen his deal with Proteam fall through just days after it had been announced, Stefano D'Aste has now been confirmed with Wiechers-Sport for the 2009 World Touring Car Championship.

The Italian had been expected to pen a new contract with Proteam, but shortly after it was confirmed by the team, it was quickly retracted.

Instead, D'Aste's agreement with the German team marks a return for him after racing together in 2007, a collaboration that saw them win the Yokohama Independents Trophy.

A second title win for Wiechers-Sport after Marc Hennerici won in 2005, D'Aste nonetheless switched to rivals Proteam for 2008 where he finished third in the overall standings after a season-long battle with team-mate Sergio Hernandez, Pierre-Yves Corthals and Franz Engstler.

Wiechers, on the other hand, endured a tough season, running Olivier Tielemans for much of the season before switching to Takayuki Aoki and Matthew Marsh in the final rounds, the latter driver finishing eighth overall in the Macau season finale.

Wiechers plan to run two BMW 320sis in 2009, with a second driver due to be announced soon.
