Augusto Farfus has refused to get carried away with talk of the World Touring Car Championship title, despite closing to within six points of defending champion Yvan Muller at Brands Hatch.

As was the case in Portugal last time out, the Brazilian was forced to carry out a fine recovery drive from the back of the field after an incident in race one to claim victory in race two and he now lies six points adrift of Muller and just one behind Gabriele Tarquini with eight races left to run.

The BMW ace had qualified on the second row of the grid but his chances of closing the gap to the leaders looked remote when he was tipped into a spin at Druids by Muller on the opening lap and dropped to the back of the field.

With Muller forced to retire – leaving him at the back of the grid for race two as a result – Farfus was aware of the fact that he could make serious inroads into the Frenchman's lead and stormed back through the field to take the flag in eighth place, securing one point and pole for race two in the process.

As he had in Porto, Farfus then controlled the second race from the front to pick up his third win of the season and close the gap to Muller and Tarquini ahead – although he refused to get carried away with talk of the title.

“This has been a complicated weekend for me,” he said. “In race one I got hit and lost a lot of positions. For fractions of a second I thought: that's it. But then I kept on pushing hard and fortunately made it to eighth.

“In race two I lead the way along with Jorg Muller, and together we celebrated another one-two finish. This success to a huge degree belongs to my team-mate and the entire crew, who once more did a great job.

“After the summer break I have to keep on scoring points consistently, in order to keep the title fight open. Yes, the gap in the drivers' championship is getting closer but six points are still a lot in these races. It is too early to talk about my title chances.”
