Jaap Van Lagen could not hide his disappointment after seeing his hopes of scoring LADA's maiden points in the World Touring Car Championship dashed on the final corner of the race.

Van Lagen had been doing a mighty job of capitalising on his rain-assisted fourth position on the grid, defying expectations that he would slip down the order to hold steady in fifth place for almost the race's entirety.

Struggling with tyre wear in the final few laps, Van Lagen's hopes of recording a historic result for the Russian team would be scuppered when he was tipped into a spin on the very final corner by charging Nicola Larini.

Sending him into the gravel trap, although Van Lagen would recover to cross the line in 11th position, it was a slim reward for his and the team's efforts. While the 'over enthusiastic' Larini would eventually be penalised for his move, Van Lagen was disappointed with the outcome.

"In the first corner I got hits from a lot of cars and there was quite a lot of body damage," the Dutchman said. "Even so, I could keep my pace with that of the front runners and I was comfortable in fifth place until at about 3 laps before the end I started struggling with tyre wear.

“With some "drifting" actions I could keep my car on the track and the cars behind me. But finally an over enthusiastic competitor pushed me out in the last corner of the very last lap, which was a real disappointment."
