The FIA Touring Car Bureau has announced that the minimum weight of all BMW and Hondas competing in the World Touring Car Championship is to be reduced with effect from this weekend's event on the streets of Pau.

In an effort to equalise performance of the different cars, and following on from the decision to limit the engine speed of the SEAT Leon TDi, the minimum weight of the BMW 320si has been reduced by 15 kilos while the weight of the Honda Accord will come down by 20 kilos.

So far this season, BMW has yet to win a race with four victories having gone the way of SEAT and two to Chevrolet, leaving the German marque currently third in the manufacturers' title.

Honda meanwhile only debuted in Valencia last time out with N.Technology joining the fray and the Golden Motors Honda Dealer Team also appearing, although the issue of weight was something that left N.Technology chief Mauro Sipsz scratching his head.

"Our debut has been handicapped due to our weight," he said after Valencia. "Our competitors today have enjoyed racing with weight dispensations, unlike us. The weight issue, has negative consequences in many different areas and obviously effects our overall performance.

"This weekend it was never a realistic possibility to have success based on the fact that we had no weight reduction unlike our racing colleagues. I hope that authorities will take the appropriate action so N.Technology can show case its hard work, and the true potential of the Honda Accord Euro R Super 2000."

With the Touring Car Bureau having now taken those steps, which will run until further notice, both BMW and Honda will aim to take a step forward this weekend with the reductions being applied to the cars' total weight including success ballast.
