Priaulx opens seasonal account

Andy Priaulx has taken his first win of the World Touring Car Championship season following a challenging weekend on the streets of Pau.

The BMW Team UK man qualified seventh for the opening race of the weekend around the French street circuit which meant his focus in the opening race was on securing the best possible grid slot for the second race.

Having finished in eighth place to secure the race two pole, Priaulx controlled the race – which started behind the Safety Car due to the wet conditions – from start to finish to lead home Nicola Larini by four and half seconds for his first win of the season.

“This weekend has been special,” he said. “The rewarding thing was to drive a wet race without any mistakes by skidding on white lines or hitting standing water.

“I know if you make the smallest mistake in a touring car you just end up sliding all the way into the tyres. I was really happy with the race and really happy with eleven points from the weekend.”

Priaulx remains the leading BMW driver in the standings but has now moved up to fourth place in the standings, just twelve points behind current series leader Gabriele Tarquini.
