Two years after delivering Chevrolet their first-ever World Touring Car win at the same circuit, Alain Menu comes away from Brands Hatch victorious again after recording a reverse grid victory.
His third win in as many years, the Menu had an eventful day of racing, but it ultimately ended on a high when he stormed to victory in the second race from pole position.
Running into controversy in the first race when he was involved in a collision with Augusto Farfus, the Swiss driver would eventually cross the line in eighth after dropping back in the latter stages to save his tyres.
Duly taking pole position for the second race, Menu was beaten off the line by Felix Porteiro but quickly retook the place with a fine move down the inside of Paddock Hill Bend. Untroubled for the remainder of the race – save for suspicions over the durability of the tyres -, Menu was delighted to add another Brands Hatch trophy to his collection.
“It is not easy to overtake here, so I knew that my only real would be into Paddock or into Druids,” he told Crash.net Radio
. “I had an opportunity on the second lap after the restart out of Clark and I thought that if he opened the door a tiny bit, I'll go on the inside. I knew what to expect from my years in the BTCC, so I was careful not to brake too late, but it worked.
“The Chevrolet was good and while I was conscious of the problems my team-mates had in the first race, I was careful not to hurt the tyres with the kerbs.”
Indeed, Menu admits his decision to drop from what would have been fourth place in the first race to eighth was a deliberate one as he sought to put himself in a better position for the second race and protect his tyres.
“It was a conscious decision because when I was radioed and they told me that Rob and Nicola had punctures, I didn't want it to happen to me, so I dropped off on the last three laps. I wanted to ease off in order to get pole position for race two, which worked.”
