Priaulx sees title reign end

1 January 1901

Andy Priaulx will go into the final round of the World Touring Car Championship at Macau knowing that his time as champion is over after seeing his title hopes draw to a close at Okayama.

The BMW Team UK driver went into the weekend knowing that his hold on the title was weakening due to the strength of the SEAT Leon TDi and the consistency of points leader Yvan Muller but he showed he wasn't going to give up his title without a fight with a fine drive in the opening race.

Having qualified in eleventh place, the Guernseyman stormed through the field in race one to secure a podium finish and looked set to repeat the feat in race two.

However, having already taken a trip into the gravel at the end of the back straight he made a mistake coming into the final turn and suffered a spin into the gravel; forcing him into retirement.

"I needed that podium in race one after qualifying eleventh, but sadly in race two I just missed my braking point," he said. "My RBM team did a great job getting the car back to how it was on Friday, and I could have made it two podiums so I want to say sorry to them.

"I have to face up to the fact that SEAT have been the fastest this year and although we have had a fantastic reign it is now over. I feel I have been beaten by the best team this year with great drivers. I want to congratulate them, and Yvan Muller who I think will win the title.

"Hopefully we will be able to go away over the winter, improve and come back fighting next year. Every race is important and so it would be great to go out on a high in Macau with a win so we will see what happens."
