Alain Menu is well placed to repeat his Macau victory from twelve months ago as he secured his first World Touring Car pole position of the year for the season finale.

The experienced Swiss driver left it until the last minute to pump in a fine lap of 2mins 30.285secs to secure his first pole position since he last conquered the Guia circuit a year ago.

It will act as a fillip for Menu, who is currently 11th in the overall standings as he nears the end of what has been a somewhat indifferent fourth season with the Chevrolet team

Nonetheless, it means he is determined to end 2008 on the high of another win, even if he got a taste of what can happen if you push too hard during qualifying.

"I thought it would be possible to do a lap in the high 30s, but somehow it all came together and I went considerably faster than I thought would have been possible," he admitted.

"Mind you, at the start of that last lap I gave myself a bit of a scare when I went too fast through Mandarin corner. I just managed not to lose the car and stepped on it again, giving it all I had. In the second, twisty sector I managed to make the difference and what had started with losing several tenths on my best sector time ended with pole position.

"As for Sunday's race, I will try everything to win it like last year."
