Thompson waits on WTCC future.

James Thompson says he could elect to move away from the World Touring Car Championship for the 2009 season if N.Technology elects to withdraw from the series.

The Briton has been a permanent fixture on the grid for the past four seasons, taking four wins while driving for Alfa Romeo, SEAT and his current N.Technology team.

Despite the Italian outfit losing factory backing from Alfa Romeo and running on a limited budget, Thompson finished third in the standings in 2007 and was then faced with another challenge this season when the team announced it was switching to the JAS Motorsport developed Honda Accord.

Having only joined the grid when the series returned to Europe for the Spanish round at Valencia, Thompson finished the 2008 campaign in 15th place in the standings, with a single win at Monza – although he lost what looked to be a certain victory in the season finale at Macau when he was forced out of the second race of the weekend following contact from Augusto Farfus.

After another year running on a shoestring compared to its rivals, N.Technology has yet to confirm whether it will return in 2009 as it seeks to get more backing from Honda for its programme, leaving Thompson looking at other options for next season.

As a result, the 34-year-old took the chance to test with leading British Touring Car Championship outfit Team Dynamics at Donington Park and he admitted that a return to the domestic series could be an option if his time in the WTCC draws to a close.

"It's possible I could come back, for sure," he told the official BTCC website. "At the moment I'm still contracted to N.Technology, but there is no programme.

"Based on what I've seen during this test and the motivation I've seen inside the team to win the championship I couldn't think of any better place to be than Dynamics. If I came back I wouldn't want it to be just because I've nothing else to do. It would be to have a proper go at the title.

"[Team boss] Steve Neal is very keen to have me in the car which I really appreciate. I enjoyed the test today, the car has the potential to win the title and I've just got see what happens in the next few weeks regards the WTCC and suchlike."
