As expected for LADA ahead of ‘test’

8 March 2009

The three LADA Sport drivers admitted that qualifying in Brazil had pretty much 'gone as expected' after the three 110s ended up near the back of the field for the World Touring Car Championship season-opener.

With the 2009-spec engines having only arrived in Brazil earlier this week, the team faced a race to prepare for the opening event of the season; an event being viewed a large test session by the team as it works towards the debut of it new Priora model later in the year.

Jaap van Lagen carried the flag for the LADA squad during the qualifying session and posted the 20th quickest time which he admitted was pretty much 'as expected'.

''Thanks to the new engine our gap to the cars at the front has reduced slightly, but we still have a lot of work to do and plenty of ground to make up,” he said. “That's the reason why we are here, as the lessons learned in competition are more valuable than those you find anywhere else. We're going to keep working hard with the aim of making decent progress throughout the season.''

Kirill Ladygin was 23rd in the second while team boss Viktor Shapovalov was 24th

''The car felt fine, but of course it's clear that we have a lot of work ahead of us in what is only our first full season as a registered manufacturer,” Shapovalov admitted. “We need to keep our expectations realistic and just focus on improving our performance step by step. But we also race because we enjoy it, and we all had a lot of fun driving the car today on this great track.''
