Farfus surprised by BMW pole position

22 March 2009

Augusto Farfus admits he was surprised to come away with pole position for the second round of the World Touring Car Championship at Puebla, as he led an all-BMW front row.

The Brazilian driver had been cynical about his chances leading up to the weekend following SEAT's domination last time out in Curitiba, not to mention their performance at the Mexican circuit last year.

However, despite trailing the Spanish team during free practice, Farfus was the driver to beat during both qualifying sessions, his effort of 1min 37.682secs smashing the lap record in the process.

Given SEAT's expected advantage in the high-altitude surroundings, Farfus says he didn't expect to be celebrating his seventh career pole position.

“Following the difficult races in Brazil we couldn't expect this result,” Farfus said. “But we worked hard and were absolutely determined to score some points here in Puebla. This mission will hopefully be easier now I am starting from pole.

“Of course I will also try to keep the lead throughout the race, although this won't be easy. It's great to have another BMW driver in Andy Priaulx beside me on the front row. A big thank you to the whole team.”
