Menu hit with grid penalty

3 May 2009

Alain Menu has been demoted to tenth on the grid for the opening World Touring Car Championship race of the weekend in Morocco – thereby preventing Chevrolet from securing its first front-row lock-out with the new Cruze.

Menu had posted the second quickest time in Q2 in Marrakech to join Rob Huff on the front row of the grid, despite ending his session parked up against the wall after running wide at turn two.

However, the Swiss star was later demoted to tenth on the grid due to the fact that his car had failed to restart after being called onto the weighing station by officials during the first segment of qualifying.

Menu's penalty moves Gabriele Tarquini onto the front row of the grid alongside pole-man Huff – who gave the Cruze its maiden pole position during the session.

“It is disappointing to lose the second position,” Menu said, “but it's good to see that progress of the Cruze and the excellent team result.

“In the last lap of Q2, I was out of turn one sideways and could not compensate understeer before turn two so I touched the wall, but its nothing serious.”
