Coronel praises team for top three slot

16 May 2009

Tom Coronel was full of praise for his SUNRED Engineering team after securing third on the grid for the first World Touring Car Championship race of the weekend on the streets of Pau.

The Dutchman had posted the fifth quickest time during the first segment of qualifying on the challenging French street circuit to secure a place in the top-ten shootout but ended the session with his SEAT Leon TFSi nursing plenty of damage to the front left after contact with the wall.

However, the SUNRED team managed to get the car fixed in time for the second part of qualifying and Coronel looked good for a possible pole position run before being demoted to third by BMW pair Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus.

Coronel was still pleased with the result however, given he hadn't expected to get a run at pole position following his incident.

“There is something about street circuits and me, I love them,” he said. “In Marrakech we missed out due to the red flag so in this qualifying I went straight for a fast lap.

“I didn't expect to be part of Q2 but I saw my team put my car back together in front of my eyes so thanks to them. It's nice to be at the front for SEAT and hope to get some points for them and myself.”
