LADA gets set for 110 farewell
18 June 2009
The LADA Sport team will bid farewell to the 110 model it has used since entering the World Touring Car Championship this weekend in the final outing for the car before it is replaced by the Priora in Portugal.
The 110 made its debut in the WTCC last season with the Russian Bears Motorsport team and has continued into this campaign as work continues on preparing the Priora for its race debut.
Jaap van Lagen, Kirill Ladygin and Viktor Shapovalov will again be on driving duties in the three cars this weekend, with the trio hoping to make the most of continued development of the engine which should boost both power and straight line speed.
"Brno is a fantastic circuit and there is always a great atmosphere there," van Lagen said. "We had some interesting evolutions on the car already for the last round in Spain and while they seemed promising, circumstances dictated that we could not really use them to their full potential. Hopefully in Brno we will be able to have a clean run and really see their full effect."
van Lagen in particular showed the potential of the new engine last time out in Spain despite a number of mechanical issues, and team principal Shapovalov admitted that the potential was there with the improved engine, even if the reliability isn't.
"We've been impressed by the speed that the latest engine modifications on the car have given us but it's clear that we need to work harder on reliability," he said. "This weekend on such a challenging track will be the perfect opportunity for us to assess the progress we have made so far, as we look forward to the debut of our new car in Portugal. The potential is clear to see, but we need to keep working very hard in order to succeed."
