Farfus celebrates historic victory

6 July 2009

Augusto Farfus secured victory in the 100th World Touring Car Championship race in Portugal having rebounded from problems during the first race of the weekend on the streets of Porto.

The Brazilian was involved in a first lap accident in race one that saw the red flags come out, with Farfus tipping Alain Menu into a spin that ultimately led to the circuit becoming blocked.

When the race resumed, Farfus was handed a drive-through penalty which dropped him back outside the points, but a determined drive and team tactics from BMW saw the Brazilian come through to finish eighth and secure pole for race two.

From there, Farfus controlled the second race from the front despite a Safety Car period and another race stoppage, to secure the honour of winning the WTCC's 100th race.

“I want give this victory to all the BMW people at the factory in Munich, everyone here and BMW Team Germany,” he said. “I am happy to win the race and very happy it's the 100th.

“We knew we were not the fastest in a straight line here so starting race two from pole was a great help and the car was fantastic. When you start a season you want to win the championship and we will look to Brands Hatch to see what further points we can get.

“Thanks to this result, we haven't lost too much ground in the drivers' standings. Many thanks to my team and the other BMW drivers.”
