Priaulx targets victory from second row

Andy Priaulx says he is firmly focused on fighting for a home victory after qualifying on the second row of the grid for the World Touring Car Championship meeting at Brands Hatch.

The BMW Team UK driver looked good for pole position in the qualifying session until the final laps, when Alain Menu and Rob Huff both went quickest on the final tours of the Brands Hatch GP circuit to secure a lock-out of the front row for Chevrolet.

However, Priaulx admitted that he wasn't too disappointed to have been knocked back to third and said it was still a good position to be in for the start.

“I think it is not a bad position to be third into turn one,” he said. “I am very pleased to be best BMW again. It was a tough qualifying with the times really close, and it was even more difficult as the track was changing all the time, and even changed right at the end.”

Going into the weekend, Priaulx finds himself more than 40 points behind leader Yvan Muller in the standings, and with his title hopes all but over, the Guernseyman said his focus for the weekend was on victory rather than simply settling for points.

“Normally if I was fighting for a championship I would say I would just want to finish, but now I just want to win,” he said. “There is nothing to lose, but it is going to be hard to pass these guys.

“Brands is a tough track and it is easy to make a mistake, so we can all make a mistake. I shall hopefully be up there ready to take an advantage if that happens. Alain owes me a race, as I gave him a win here a few years ago when I went off in turn one, although I think he has forgotten about that!”
