Priaulx: I had the pace to win

21 July 2009

Andy Priaulx was left to reflect on a missed opportunity to secure victory in his home round of the World Touring Car Championship despite picking up two points finishes from the Brands Hatch weekend.

The BMW Team UK driver headed into the weekend still looking for his first win of the season and looked good for a home pole before being knocked back to the second row of the grid by Chevrolet duo Alain Menu and Rob Huff as the end of qualifying.

Priaulx hed third behind the pair when the race kicked off but despite his best efforts, was unable to find a way past Huff as the race progressed and had to settle for the final step on the podium.

Once again in race two, Priaulx found himself stuck behind a slower car as he spent the race dicing with the SEAT of Gabriele Tarquini – with the Italian making the most of the extra torque on his diesel engine to stay ahead.

It leaves Priaulx still hunting for his first victory of the campaign although the Guernseyman said he was sure it wasn't far away.

“I really wanted a win today and I had a car that was faster than the guys in front in both races,” he said. “I had some good battles with Rob Huff and Gabriele Tarquini and was faster than them, but I could just not make any of my moves stick. I tried on many occasions but they defended heavily and it is difficult to overtake round this track.

“I have the speed this year to win, but it just hasn't happened to date. Hopefully that will come later in the season.”
