Farfus and Müller lead way in Macau testing

It was a BMW benefit on the opening day of running around the Autódromo da Guia in Macau, as BMW Team Germany duo Augusto Farfus and Jorg Müller showed SEAT title protagonists Yvan Muller and Gabriele Tarquini the way
BMW Team Germany duo Augusto Farfus and Jorg Müller set the pace during today's testing around the tortuous Autódromo da Guia ahead of the weekend's 2009 FIA World Touring car Championship (WTCC) title-decider in the former Portuguese enclave of Macau.

In the first half of the session all drivers were very cautious in getting used to the grip on the track. Tom Coronel was the first to top the timesheets, before championship leader Gabriele Tarquini, chief rival Yvan Muller, the Frenchman's German namesake and Rickard Rydell subsequently lowered the marker.

Halfway through the session, Farfus and Müller clocked the two fastest laps for good, with the Brazilian an impressive six tenths of a second clear. Afterwards, only Rob Huff's Chevrolet managed to close the gap as the British star vaulted up the order into third.

Muller and Tarquini wound up fifth and seventh respectively at the close of play – separated by a scant two hundredths of a second and split by the BMW Team UK machine of multiple WTCC Champion Andy Priaulx – whilst Coronel improved to tenth place and fastest of the Independent runners. James Thompson was 13th in his LADA Priora, more than five seconds ahead of team-mates Jaap van Lagen and Kirill Ladygin down outside of the top 20.

A few drivers had some moments, as Lei Kit Meng went straight on at the Lisbõa bend and later spun at Dona Maria, albeit managing to avoid the walls on both occasions – unlike Stefano D'Aste and Jaap van Lagen, who came to grief at Matsuya and Fishermen's respectively.

The WTCC competitors will hit the track again on Friday for two 30-minute practice sessions and an extended 45-minute qualifying, but in the meantime, Thursday's testing times are below:
