Engstler suffers broken collarbone

22 November 2009

Franz Engstler has been diagnosed with a broken collarbone following his heavy accident in the final race of the World Touring Car Championship season in Macau.

Engstler, the oldest driver on the grid, was one of three drivers involved in the accident exiting the final corner that forced the season finale to be red-flagged.

Felix Porteiro had got out of shape entering the corner and gone off into the tyre wall, with his car then bouncing back into the middle of circuit.

Engstler was unable to avoid sliding into the Spaniard's car when he then arrived on the scene and while the two cars following Engstler were able to miss his stricken car, Andre Couto's SEAT ploughed into the BMW and left both cars heavily damaged.

While Couto was able to walk away, Engstler was seen to be in some discomfort after exiting his car and was taken to hospital where he has been diagnosed with a broken collarbone, although the German has since been released.

Porteiro was also taken to hospital as a precaution but has also been released after escaping serious injury.
