Huff ends on a high

Rob Huff wins at Macau to secure fifth for Chevrolet in the WTCC standings
Rob Huff was able to celebrate his seventh victory in the World Touring Car Championship after a lights-to-flag success in the opening race of the weekend at Macau helped him to wrap up fifth in the championship standings.

After qualifying on pole, Huff led the opening race of the weekend from start to finish to win in Macau for the second straight season and then picked up eighth place in race two – despite damaging his car early on in the race when he ran into a rival's car.

Despite seeing the bonnet on his car dislodged in the incident, Huff was able to battle his way to another point, which sees him end the season as the leading Chevrolet driver in the standings.

“Today was a 'perfect car, perfect race' day and I am very happy with the result,” the Briton said. “Race one was very good, it is rather unusual to go round Macau without the slightest mistake, not even scratching a mirror, and I could keep the advantage of the pole. In the first 3-4 laps, Monteiro was pushing very hard behind me but then the gap increased and all went fine.

“In race two, I got caught in the typical bottle-neck at the first corner and then fought to re-gain some positions. Finishing eighth I am very happy being fifth in the overall championship and the best Cruze in the championship.”

Chevrolet Europe motorsport chief Eric Neve was delighted to end the season on a high and said the team was now focused on fighting for the title in 2010 when Yvan Muller will join Huff and Alain Menu in the Chevrolet line-up.

“It's nice to finish the season on a high like this,” he said. “We are very happy with what the Cruze has shown in this first year of its racing career: seven wins and three poles is really good for a debuting car. Moreover, the Cruze has proven to be the best car on street circuits and grown steadily on all kind of tracks. 2010 is starting now. We are delighted to have Yvan Muller joining our team and preparing a busy work plan for the winter. We really want to be fighting for the title next year!”
