Coronel targets success with Leon TDi

12 February 2010

Reigning Independents Champion Tom Coronel says outright podiums are the aim for the 2010 World Touring Car Championship season following the announcement that he will switch to a SEAT Leon TDi for the new campaign.

Coronel, who won the title for the second time last year, will remain with SUNRED Engineering for the season ahead but will move up to the diesel-powered machine after the withdrawal of the factory team made the Leon TDi available to privateer teams.

"I always said that I wanted to have a diesel car,” Coronel said. “At last I managed to get one. With this car we can fight for podium places on a regular basis.

"It is fantastic to have the same car that won the World Championship. This is the chance I was waiting for, it can't be better, can it?"

Coronel added that he was delighted to extend his relationship with SUNRED into another season, with the team benefitting from close ties to SEAT for the season ahead.

"Over the last two years we have developed a great relationship and I really feel at home here,” he said. “Of course the team has close ties with SEAT Sport and the workshop is just around the corner. This makes a collaboration more efficient."

SUNRED has already signed former European Touring Car Cup winner Michel Nykjaer for the season ahead, with the rumour mill suggesting that the team could also be the most likely destination for 2009 title winner Gabriele Tarquini.
