F1 and rally drivers to join WTCC next year?

Stars from the world of F1 and rallying are linked with drives in the WTCC next year
Robert Kubica has become the latest high profile driver to be linked with a drive in the World Touring Car Championship for 2014, with speculation suggesting he could secure a role with Citroen if they join the grid next year.

According to Autoweek, Kubica, a former Grand Prix winner and championship contender in 2008, has been offered a deal by the French manufacturer for next year, when new regulations for the WTCC come into play.

The reports come on the back of the fact that Kubica has been tipped to use a Citroen DS3 for a programme in the FIA European Rally Championship this season.

Should any WTCC deal be done, it would see Kubica join fellow former F1 stars Gabriele Tarquini and Tiago Monteiro on the grid, with the pair teaming together with Honda for 2013.

Since leaving F1, Tarquini has secured a range of tin-top titles - including the BTCC, ETCC and WTCC – and is seen as an invaluable asset to Honda this season, while Monteiro has also been a race winner in the WTCC, despite not always racing with the fastest package.

Citroen are yet to officially confirm plans for 2014 plans, with Honda being the only manufacturer to outline any WTCC options.

However, nine-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb has been vocal to the press when asked about joining the grid ever since it was revealed that the WTCC could be an option after his retirement from full-time competition in the WRC; the Frenchman being keen to reiterate that Citroen will be on the grid and with him as one of their drivers.

Another superstar from the WRC is the 2003 champion, Petter Solberg, who has been reported to have offers from Citroen, Subaru and Renault for next season; the latter two manufacturers also rumoured to be considering entries in 2014 when the new rules come into play.

Solberg was left without a drive in the WRC this year and is looking at his options for a full-time return to competition in the future, with the possibility that he could renew his rivalry with Loeb in circuit racing next year.

WTCC may be gone but in 2016 or so given the hot news that keep coming for 2014 with more manufacturers involved with Citroen, Renault and Subaru (which is new to me) and big motorsport names. Time will tell if the FIA got the formula right to keep people interested on the longer term but the outlook as of today seems pretty positive. My wish though would definitely to have longer races for a start and while there are talks of making the series sexier, I hope the cars will still look relatively close to production cars.
