Oriola set for WTCC return

22 February 2013

Pepe Oriola has confirmed plans to continue racing in the FIA World Touring Car Championship this season, according to reports in his native Spain.

The Barcelona driver, still just 18 years of age, will compete in his third WTCC season this year and is hoping for even better after impressing during a very productive campaign last year.

In his strongest season to date, Oriola finished in the top six on eight occasions, including a personal best of second in both Portugal and Japan – making him the youngest podium finish in series history.

It meant Oriola ended the year eighth in the championship standings, although a series of incidents late in the year meant he missed out on the Yokohama Independents Trophy and had to settle for second behind Norbert Michelisz.

This season however, he won't be eligible to compete for the Independents crown, according to a report by Motoryracing.com.

The report also revealed that backing for Oriola's programme will come from Tuenti, Neox and the official tourist campaign for Egypt, with his car set to carry the slogan 'Egypt, where is all begins'.
