Nash takes early Indy lead

27 March 2013

James Nash enjoyed a solid start to life with the Bamboo Engineering World Touring Car Championship team after securing the early lead in the Independents Championship standings.

The former Team Aon man was competing in his Chevrolet Cruze for the first time and produced an impressive performance in difficult conditions to bring his car home second amongst the Independent runners in both races.

The Briton also secured a brace of seventh place overall finishes to secure his best results since taking his sole top six finish in Morocco last year.

“This weekend has been a bit of a baptism of fire for me,” he admitted. “Monza is a very fast circuit for my first race in a Cruze, so add bad weather to that and on one hand I'm relieved to come out leading the Yokohama Independents Trophy but there is still much more to come from me. Roll on Marrakech.”

Team-mate Alex MacDowall sits second to Nash in the Independent standings having started his season with an Independents Trophy success in the opening race, where he joined Yvan Muller and Tom Chilton on an all-Chevrolet podium.

While MacDowall was then forced to retire from race two after suffering a puncture, he insisted he was satisfied with the way in which his weekend had panned out.

“I'm delighted with my first podium in the WTCC,” he said. “I love the rain, being British makes me somewhat of an expert in the wet. Race one was a nice clean affair but race two saw me start further down the field and that is where many of the tangles happen. Overall I'm satisfied with leaving Monza fifth in the [overall] driver standings.”
