More rough luck for MacDowall
2 July 2013
Double podium man for 2013, Alex MacDowall has struggled for form in the last couple of round of the WTCC and saw his Independent title charge take a turn for the worse after another double non-score in Porto.
The youngster has been dogged with bad form from Moscow and this weekend did little to better the mood in his side of the Bamboo Engineering garage.
The Monza and Hungaroring podium finisher, grappled with issues from qualifying as nothing went right for him in the heat of Porto.
"In qualifying I brushed the barrier a couple of corners before the accident," explained Alex. "It unsettled the car and then I was a bit offline for the next corner, in hindsight I rushed that a bit and then through the next turn I lost the back of the car and hit the barriers. There was a lot to fix on the car, the team did a fantastic job and were up until half-past three in the morning getting it all sorted for the races."
During the race, MacDowall understandably found it near impossible to find a good run, due to the tough demands of a street circuit and the difficulty to pass cars on the tight, twisty corners.
“It's so hard to get past people on a street track like Porto, even when they're slower than you, and after the massive effort the team made after qualifying it was pointless taking any risks and ending up with more damage,” reflected Alex at the end of a frustrating weekend. “We're still third in the Independents Trophy but we can't keep saying that, we really need to close the gap in Argentina."by Dexter Fielding
