Chilton pleased with third podium

3 July 2013

Despite becoming a father for the first time in between Moscow and Porto, Tom Chilton showed that he had lost none of his speed after some sleepless nights and grabbed his third podium of his WTCC career with a splendid second in Porto.

From his front row start in race one, the 28 year old set about piling the pressure on his team mate and championship leader, Yvan Muller from the off, but didn't want to take 'even the smallest risk' of putting a pass on the Frenchman on the tight and unforgiving street circuit, which could potentially of put both drivers out of the race.

Chilton described his 'very close' race one and what it feels like to complete a lap safely on this punishing Circuito da Boavista street track.

"It was a very close race – at one point, I was literally sniffing Muller's exhaust fumes – but I couldn't do anything about it because we both have the same car and to take even the smallest risk around here might mean you both go off," he said.

"I actually made a small mistake on lap one and Michel Nykjaer got really close to me, but there's not enough room here to pass. The overtaking opportunities here aren't great, but as a driver it's one of the best circuits to race on and it's very rewarding when you safely complete a lap."

Chilton had a less successful race two with a ninth place, but will be looking to put himself into the fight for third place in the championship when the series returns in Argentina in six weeks' time.
