Chilton takes podium on mixed weekend

8 August 2013

Tom Chilton enjoyed his first weekend of racing at the new Termas de Rio Hondo circuit after securing a podium finish in the latest rounds of the World Touring Car Championship in Argentina.

Having missed out on a potential pole position due to traffic in qualifying, the RML driver battled back in the opening race to take third behind team-mate Yvan Muller and fellow Chevrolet man Pepe Oriola.

The podium came after a heated battle with Oriola and the Honda of Norbert Michelisz, while Gabriele Tarquini kept the Briton honest in the closing stages.

"This was a great result for the team; they've worked hard all weekend," Chilton said of the opening race. "I got hit quite hard from behind in turn one and I was lucky not to go off at the exit.

"I had to use my tyres quite hard to get back up into second place – I'm sure it looked great on TV when I went around the outside of Michelisz at turn eleven!

"By the end of the race, my tyres weren't in great shape and Pepe [Oriola] probably had a little bit left."
Sadly for Chilton, a clash with Alex MacDowall early in race two dropped him to the back of the pack and meant he failed to score, despite a battling drive back up to twelfth.
