Monteiro endures ‘hard fight’ for race two win
5 November 2013
Tiago Monteiro finally broke his Honda duck for the year in race two at Shanghai, taking his first victory of the 2013 FIA WTCC and leading home a Civic trio ahead of Gabriele Tarquini and Norbert Michelisz.
The former F1 podium man, who has now won five races in the series, said that he had been anticipating a victory for some time and, whilst it made life tougher at the front, enjoyed his fight with Tarquini.
“I'm very excited, because I was expecting this for a while, but there was always something that went wrong," said a jubilant Monteiro, "It's funny because this was not a track where we expected to win. Of course, starting from pole position gave us a chance, but we knew it was going to be difficult.
"It was a hard fight, because Gabriele was chasing me closely in the first laps and I had to push at the limit for the whole race, trying not to make mistakes, as he was right behind me. But I was really happy with the car and to have three Civics on the podium is a great result for Honda.”
The win gives the ex-Jordan/Midland/Spyker grand prix driver a genuine chance of a top eight finish in the standings as he is now only five points behind Tom Coronel heading into the series finale in Macau.by Dexter Fielding
