Morocco WTCC: Munnich prepares for Chevrolet bow

Munnich Motorsport prepares for its second season of WTCC racing having switched to Chevrolet machinery and signed Gianni Morbidelli.
Rene Munnich is confident his eponymous team can enjoy a strong season with the new TC1 specification Chevrolet Cruze, despite its late commitment to the series.

Racing under the Munnich Motorsport banner, the German team will embark on its second season in the World Touring Car Championship, despite having initially insisted it was going to focus solely on RallyX in 2014.

Nonetheless, the opportunity to take delivery of two RML-prepared Chevrolet Cruzes built to new TC1 specifications would lure Munnich back, with team owner-driver Rene Munnich assuming one car and the other being driven by experienced former F1 driver Gianni Morbidelli.

Having shaken down the new car at Portimao, Munnich will get his first proper run at the 2014 WTCC season opener in Morocco. Despite the late start, he is optimistic about the season ahead.

“Everything is a little skimpy planned, because we got the cars at the end of March. We could gather the first experience with our new Chevrolet Cruze TC1 at tests in Portugal.

“We will continue learning on every race track starting from Morocco, but we are optimistic to have a good part in the races during this season.

“We are really looking forward to the season opening in Morocco and we will use every minute during the race to get more familiar with the new cars. We will try to knot onto our performance of our premiere season at the WTCC.”

After several seasons in sportscar racing, Munnich switched to WTCC in 2013 with a trio of SEAT Leons, one of which was driven by defending champion Rob Huff. Despite the ageing machinery, Huff still managed to notch up two wins and fourth in the overall standings.

For 2014, Munnich will join ROAL and Campos Racing in running the new TC1 specification Chevrolet Cruze, which has been developed independently by RML, the team behind its four straight WTCC titles.
