WTCC France: Muller bounces back with home 1-2

Yvan Muller scores his first WTCC win of the season at Paul Ricard to recover ground in the fight for the 2014 title.
Yvan Muller has clawed back ground in the race for the 2014 World Touring Car Championship after notching up his first win of the season on home soil at Paul Ricard.

Benefitting from the grid demotion of his Citroen team-mates and main rivals, Muller was the dominant winner in the damp conditions of race one, passing early leader Gabriele Tarquini on lap three to reel off a relatively easy win.

Starting tenth in race two, Muller made swift progress up the order, but found himself behind team-mate Jose Maria Lopez after a skirmish in the mid-pack initially lost him time. Despite his efforts to close on the Argentine, Muller would be forced to settle for second.

Nonetheless, the four-time world champion was pleased with his day's work on both his and Citroen's home soil.

“I nearly went for slicks for race one, but it was too risky. I got off to a very bad start, but I didn't fall too far down the field. I didn't panic, as I knew I had the speed. After Michelisz, I passed Tarquini on a corner where he lost power.

“In race two, the first lap was a little bit crazy and I lost places while avoiding other cars at the chicane. The battle with Pechito was competitive but respectful: just the way it should be between teammates. First and second is a pretty good result: I couldn't have hoped for more from this weekend!”
