Citroen continued to affirm its dominance of the World Touring Car Championship by locking out the top three positions in first free practice at the high-speed Salzburgring, despite its maximum 60kg success ballast.
Championship leader Jose Maria Lopez led the way from team-mates Yvan Muller and Sebastien Loeb, the trio comfortably ahead of the pack, which was headed up by leading Chevrolet driver Tom Coronel in the ROAL prepared Cruze.
Chevrolet counterpart Hugo Valente followed in fifth position, with Gabriele Tarquini leading the Honda charge in sixth, from Civic counterpart Norbert Michelisz. Rob Huff was the fastest LADA driver, but down in 13th place.
A fast circuit that saw several drivers penalised last season for driving too slowly in qualifying in order to catch a tow, FP1 saw spins for Valente and James Thompson, while Pasquale di Sabatino crashed into the barriers.
