Yvan Muller has secured a welcome pole position for the seventh round of the 2014 FIA World Touring Car Championship at Spa-Francorchamps, in doing so scoring an additional five points.
Under pressure to get the better of Jose Maria Lopez after a mixed weekend last time out in Russia, Muller came into qualifying as the underdog having seen his main rival dominate throughout testing and practice.
However, having signalled his intentions by topping Q1, Muller made the most of an error by Lopez on his one flying lap during Q3 to get the lap he needed to secure pole position over his Citroen team-mate.
A close session that belies the lengthy Belgian circuit, Citroen trio Muller, Sebastien Loeb and Lopez would be split by less than two tenths of the second, though the latter arguably lost more than half a second with his moment at Eau Rouge, thus denying him pole.
Away from the ever-dominant Citroen contingent, Hugo Valente lived up to his billing as they closest rivals this weekend with fourth on the grid in the Campos Chevrolet, ahead of Honda trio Gabriele Tarquini, Tiago Monteiro and Norbert Michelisz.
Qualifying tenth to secure pole position for race two was Gianni Morbidelli, the Italian sharing the front row with Proteam Honda's Mehdi Bennani.
Meanwhile, Ma Qing Hua – the surprise winner for Citroen last time out in Russia – could only manage 14th after failing to get a lap hooked up.
