WTCC: RML introduces Chevrolet Cruze updates

RML will bring updates to the Chevrolet Cruze contingent for the final four rounds of the 2014 World Touring Car Championship.
RML has introduced a raft of updates to its Chevrolet Cruze cars in time for the final portion of the 2014 FIA World Touring Car Championship.

The British firm, which was the driving force behind Chevrolet's dominance in the WTCC between 2010 and 2013 (factory supported 2010-2012, privateer 2013), developed the Cruze to the new TC1 specifications and sold them to customer outfits Campos, ROAL and Munnich Motorsport.

In a year that has been utterly dominated by the new factory Citroen effort, RML has had the honour of being the only alternative outfit to score a race win (with Munnich Motorsport's Gianni Morbidelli), but has since slipped back in the development race as the season has progressed.

Indeed, with Honda and LADA making a step forward, RML have taken the summer break to introduce changes to the Cruze in an effort to spark its podium challenge for the remainder of the year.

“We have three great customer teams but they have limited resources and budget and we are not a works backed program,” said Head of Design Mark Way. “We don't have a test car or development budget. Testing outside of a race weekend has been limited and therefore the optimisation phase of the program has been slow.

“Optimising a race car during and for a specific race weekend is one thing, developing a race car over a race weekend is another. Having said that, the RML Cruze is the only car other than Citroën to have qualified on pole and won a race so far this season which I think is an amazing testimony to the basic design and the determination of all the teams.”

“We have worked hard with our customers to try and bring value for money updates. One thing with having three different teams running is you know if they all have the same feedback then it's actually happening! So we have reacted to drivers' and engineers' feedback in developing new suspension geometry and also reviewed some areas where we were time bound in the initial design phase such as the aero.”

Four rounds of the 2014 WTCC season remain with Tom Coronel classified as Chevrolet's leading driver in sixth place overall.
