Jose Maria Lopez says an "incredible" season which culminated in the WTCC title was made all the more special by winning at Suzuka because Ayrton Senna was his idol.

A dominant campaign saw Lopez wrap up the championship in Japan with three races still to run, with Lopez ending the season with a record-breaking ten victories after success in Macau. However, Lopez said taking the title at Suzuka was the perfect result for him due to Senna's affinity with the track where he won all three of his F1 world championships.

"It has been an incredible season for me," Lopez said. "For sure my goal was to fight for the World Championship, but I certainly did not expect to lead the classification from the beginning to the end, claim the title even before Macau and establish a new record for race victories.
