Bennani warns rivals of Marrakech street circuit dangers

Mehdi Bennani is preparing for his home round of the World Touring Car Championship and has warned his rivals about the risks the Moulay El Hassan street circuit possesses
As the FIA World Touring Car Championship moves towards round two in Marrakech local hero Mehdi Bennani has warned his competitors if they thought Argentina was tricky they've seen nothing yet.

The Sebastien Loeb Racing team driver says the Moulay El Hassan street circuit will punish any driver who makes even the smallest of mistakes due to its wall-lined layout.

“It's very difficult because we cannot make any mistakes,” Bennani said. “It's not like Argentina where, for example, if I made a mistake in qualifying and I can go into the gravel. Here in Marrakech it's another story because if I do make a mistake I'll go directly into the wall and destroy a lot of the car.

“It's not only difficult, it's also challenging to push to the maximum as you can but to keep the car on the track.”

The Citroen C-Elysee driver is no stranger to on-track tussles after a collision in race one in Argentina dropped him out of the points-paying positions. The 31-year-old driver made amends in race two, finishing fifth which put him eighth in the WTCC drivers' championship after the first round.

Despite 2015 marking his debut season in the Citroen machinery, Bennani is arguably in the most competitive car on the grid after fellow Citroen drivers Jose Maria Lopez and Sebastien Loeb both claimed victories in the opening round.

In last season's Moroccan event, Lopez claimed pole position and race one victory while Loeb took the win in the second race, with Citroen Racing claiming five of the six podium places.

Race two in 2014 was highly eventful for the Moroccan driver, who was handed a drive-through penalty after causing a collision on the fist lap. Bennani was continually in the wars as he battled up through the grid but was later disqualified from the race for having an underweight car.

The Moroccan event on the 4.624km Circuit Moulay El Hassan first hosted the WTCC series in 2009 and has been a permanent fixture in the calendar ever since. The race is set to take place between the 17-19th April.
